Here are my top 4 non-fiction books of 2023.
Something Major: The New Playbook for Women at Work by Randi Braun
I will not stop talking about this book. One of the few leadership books written by a woman for women to hit the WSJ Bestseller list, this read is a must for every woman (and men who want to amplify) who wants to not only elevate their own position, but to truly thrive.
So much of the work and research I do around burnout leads to implementing better self-care. But when we’re constantly bombarded with the commoditized ideal of self-care, we miss the point entirely. Through her very personal story, Pooja Lakshmin hits point by point what gets to be our individualized real self care as a truly inner exploration and what we can leave behind in our Instagram scroll.
I loved this book so much that I had to meet Farnoosh Tarobi in person. Lucky me, I was already in NYC for a conference on the same day that Farnoosh was giving a book talk at Luminary with Cate Luzio, who I’ve also long admired. So much of my work centers around parsing out fears – is this fear expansive because we’re onto something great or reactive because we’re just staying in our own little box. Farnoosh breaks fear into all the categories that hold us back – rejection, money, FOMO, failure – and reclaims them to harness the control from the awareness we gain.
Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood by Maureen Ryan
Pick this book up at your own risk to some beloved TV shows you may have enjoyed throughout the years. This book was both incredibly eye-opening and validating to some of my own experiences and perceptions, mapping out not just ways the entertainment industry has failed so many people, but also offering supportive ways to rebuild. The ground covered felt equal parts exposé and leadership development – how to approach any business, especially creative, with a human-centered approach.
My GTR (get to read) pile is already miles long, but I will always have room for more.
